BOSTON -- About 26,000 Massachusetts electric customers are still without power after Tropical Storm Irene.

National Grid reported Friday that nearly 22,000 of its customers are still without electricity.

NStar says less than 4,000 of the homes and businesses it services are powerless Friday.

About 500,000 customers statewide lost power during when Irene hit last Sunday.

The utilities have been subject to intense criticism from politicians and homeowners who say their response times were slow and their outreach efforts to customers poor.

The companies have responded by saying Irene was an unusual weather event and their crews have been working around the clock to restore power.

RUTLAND, VT <span-source></span-source><span-source></span-source>(wsiu) - <span-content></span-content><span-content></span-content>One of the 101 Ameren Illinois workers sent to help repair power lines in Vermont says Hurricane Irene unleashed flash-flooding in the state of a kind unseen in Illinois.

Mark Drawve is an electrical superintendent with Ameren's Mattoon office. He and fellow crew members are working to restore power in the Rutland area of the state served by Central Vermont Public Service.

Drawve says the flooding has washed entire sections of power lines away, meaning those lines must be completely rebuilt. In addition, Drawve says the flooding has washed out roads, making it hard for their crews to travel around the region.

"We sent some crews Sunday evening to areas that they knew would be impacted by the flash floods. And because of that, until they get some roads repaired, we can't even get those crews back, or hooked up back with the main force. And they continue to work on those roads as we speak."

With all these difficulties, Drawve says line crews restored power to about 18-thousand Central Vermont Public Service customers on Monday. He says Ameren crews did the work for about 6-thousand of those customers.

Drawve says he hopes most customers will have their power back by the end of Tuesday. But he says his Ameren crews are not used to working in Rutland's hills and valleys -- and there's talk of moving them to another area, and bringing in a Canadian crew more familiar with that type of terrain.

Braintree, Vermont - The residents of Riford Brook Road in Braintree, Vermont are doing what they can to access the outside world.

During Sunday's storm, the river rose, taking out the only bridge into the neighborhood.

It also washed out much of the street.

"The road doesn't even exist, all it is culverts, with nothing around them. Big rocks, trees are in road," said Bruce Tabor.

Tabor has spent the past few days checking in on his fellow neighbors.

With his truck he is barely able to make it a few miles down the road.

"We've been having meetings at 10 o'clock. Everybody gets together and sees if anybody has any needs, like any medications, ice, food," said Tabor.

To reach the other side, they have to climb ladders.

But three days after Irene came through, many say they've received no help from the government.

"Unless you got a generator, which we don't have, we don't have access to. You can't take showers, wash dishes," said Terri Kavanaugh.

Wednesday, Vermont Emergency Management officials say they've added Braintree to their list.

The river didn't just destroy roads and bridges.

It also washed away what used to be a two story home.

"We could hear it kind of crunching and next thing you know, in she went and broke up into a 100 pieces like nothing," said David Atkinson.

Atkinson had been living in his home for more than a decade.

At 70 years old, he says there is no way there is any hope of restoring it.

"I mean I lay in bed at night thinking all things that I don't have now."

But he says at least he's does have the rest of his life to look forward to.

RUTLAND, Vt. -- Vermont's largest electric utility says it could be weeks before all of its customers get their power back.

The Central Vermont Public Service Corp. says that as of Tuesday morning almost 19,000 customers remained without power. At the peak of the storm about 70,000 CVPS customers were without power.

Vermont's other utilities are reporting about 1,200 outages.

The remnants of Irene did more than just drop trees onto power lines.

Some CVPS electric substations were damaged or destroyed by flood waters and power cannot be restored in some areas until roads into the areas have been repaired.

In some areas, entire sections of the utility system will have to be rebuilt.

COLCHESTER, Vt. -- Vermont Emergency Management officials say they'll use helicopters to airlift food, water and supplies to flood-stricken towns that have been cut off by road and bridge washouts stemming from Hurricane Irene flooding.

Emergency Management spokesman Mark Bosma says Vermont National Guard helicopters will be heading Tuesday to Cavendish, Granville, Hancock, Killington-Mendon, Marlboro, Pittsfield, Plymouth, Rochester, Stockbridge, Strafford, Stratton and Wardsboro.

The state also plans to use special vehicles to get supplies into other towns where access is cut-off for the public but where roads may be passable for National Guard vehicles. They are Ira, Grafton, Halifax, Searsburg, Wilmington, Woodford and Woodstock.

The supplies arrived at National Guard headquarters in Colchester early Tuesday in a convoy of 30 trucks from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
