07/06/2012 - Pantagraph - More Cancellations as Temperature Soars
BLOOMINGTON — Several outdoor activities were postponed or canceled Thursday as triple-digit temperatures kept Central Illinois feeling like a convection oven.
An excessive-heat warning is in effect until 7 p.m. Saturday for the Twin Cities, Springfield, Peoria, Champaign, Decatur and other Illinois cities. Daily high temperatures will be in the low 100s until then, and humidity will make it feel even hotter.
“The effects of heat are cumulative ... and worsen as excessive heat continues for several days,” the National Weather Service’s warning said. “Prolonged exposure to the heat may quickly result in heat exhaustion or heat stroke ... especially if your body is working hard.”
After a Saturday night with a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, the heat is expected to break, leaving highs in the mid-80s through next week.
